First let me begin by fully disclosing I know NOTHING about sports.. I have always been proud that I am not a sports widow.. (I believe that is the correct terminology), my husband shows almost NO interest in sports – sure we watch the Super Bowl (for the commercials) & the World Series if it’s a team he grew up watching… but other than those couple times a year we normally don’t pay much attention at all.
That being said my oldest daughter woke us up this am for a different reason than the normal, weather check (she’s DYING to begin wearing sandals/flip-flops to school). This a.m. I heard her voice ask if Daddy was awake, and then she asked, whose team are we on?
He stumbled and replied, “What do you mean, whose team are we on?”
“Well I heard on the radio and kids at school are talking about UNC & Duke basketball games and who will win.. one of the colleges in Arizona is playing against Duke I just heard that, so since we are from Arizona.. whose team am I supposed to be on?” you could almost hear the concern in her voice. These questions are ALL about the fashion choices of the day, what to wear.. the Arizona Cardinals t-shirt she has had since Super Bowl several years ago, OR her UNC cheerleader outfit…
It made me stop and realize how much NC LOVES their basketball teams & the March Madness season, I mean my 4th grader is getting so involved in all the buzz and excitement that she wants to be included in whatever way she can… it also makes me realize how much of a sports mecca we moved to when we left Phoenix, AZ for Raleigh, NC. With 40 universities & colleges in this metro area there’s no shortage of teams to cheer on! (I will confess tho will live in a predominately heavy NC State Wolfpack fan base)
HOW THIS APPLIES TO REAL ESTATE
It also has transcended into other thoughts I am struggling with currently… I have been trying to work all aspects of this business. What I mean by that is I’m trying to reach everyone interested in real estate to begin my ‘new’ career in Raleigh (my 14 yrs of experience from Phx may be kicking in right now).. after having this discussion this morning with our oldest I realized I also need to pick a team. This business is hard but working in it daily without direct focus is simply insane…
Starting today instead of trying to cast a HUGE net in my marketing efforts, I have made a conscious decision to focus most of my marketing on sellers, I’m good at it, I have a TON of skills in listing and selling homes, including short sales (thanks to Phoenix where I learned thru trial by fire)… and if I learned something years ago it’s if you don’t have a focus, lots of distraction will always find you. As agents we can not be everything to everyone – there’s not enough time in the day… believe me MANY agents try, their clients are the ones who suffer, often frustrated beyond help…
SO whose team are you on? U of A or Duke?
Now that I have put this all out into the Universe and Blog-O-Sphere… I’m going to sign off now and go make my phone calls and plan the rest of my marketing efforts for a 3 week period, including lots of door knocking!

P.S. I had to look it up… but since “K” our oldest showed some interest I guess I should get some munchies and watch the game tonight… maybe Coach K will inspire her some more!
